Margate Crowns First Ever “Mr Margate” in Joyful Beard & Moustache Celebration

Margate witnessed a fantastic afternoon of creativity, laughter, music and community spirit on Saturday as the town hosted its first ever Mr Margate Beard & Moustache Competition sponsored by Morgan's Pomade at the Old Kent Market.

Around 150 people gathered to cheer on contestants who took to the runway to showcase an impressive range of facial hair styles — from perfectly groomed classic beards to wildly imaginative moustache creations.

The event, organised by Lee Thompson of Gentlemen’s Bits of Margate, aimed to celebrate individuality, confidence and the town’s famously creative character.

Contestants competed across several light-hearted categories including Best Groomed Beard, Best Natural Beard, Best Moustache, Most Creative Facial Hair, Best Moustache in Progress and a crowd-pleasing Kids Facial Hair category. No too mention the People's Choice Award.

A panel of local judges scored entrants on grooming, personality, creativity and overall impact before winners were announced in front of an enthusiastic audience

.

The coveted title of Mr Margate 2026 was awarded to Richard Oliver at the end of the ceremony to loud applause and celebration.

Lee Thompson said:
“We wanted to create something fun that brings people together and shows off Margate’s humour and creativity. The atmosphere was brilliant and the support from the community was amazing.”

Photography and filming captured the colourful event, with organisers already hoping to make Mr Margate an annual highlight in the town’s events calendar.
